Ariana Grande has responded to speculation regarding her love life with a post addressing the ever present “double standards” and “misogyny” in the media.

Having formerly split with rapper Big Sean, the pop star was linked by some publications to One Direction’s Niall Horan – a story she felt took precedent over her own talents and successes as an artist. On 7 June, the singer posted a proclamation on Twitter in which she addresses the unfair treatment of female pop stars with regards to sexuality and status.

“I meant what I said about not being Sean’s ex is that I am tired of living in a world where women are mostly referred to as a man’s past, present or future,” she writes.

“If a woman TALKS about sex openly ... she is shamed! But if a man talks or RAPS freely about all the women (or more commonly used “bitches” / hoes” ... how lovely) he’s had ... he is regaled.”

She also explains that she comes from a long lineage of female activists, and references Gloria Steinem’s famous feminist article After Black Power, Women’s Liberation, suggesting the struggle for equality is far from over.

Her statement has been met with support from others in the music industry, including Scooter Braun, Rita Ora and Taylor Swift, who has previously expressed similar concerns over the unbalanced coverage of her music compared to male artists. “I’m so proud of you, always. But especially today,” Swift posted on Twitter.
