Since his directorial debut with Hereditary, Ari Aster has been terrifying audiences. Which is what makes his new film, Eddington, such a departure. Aster and humor isn’t something that go hand in hand but it will be interesting for audiences.
Aster is, as previously stated, known for horror and while movies like Midsommar have a more layered approach to its storytelling, it is still a horror movie at its core. With Eddington, Aster is bringing his unique take on a dark comedy and a modern western to life. With praise out of Cannes, many are shocked by how he’s managed to bring the “modern” western to life.
We haven’t really had a “western” work in movies. We’ve had one offs that have been okay and movies like Hell or High Water put a spin on the western as a concept but with the trailer for Eddington and its Cannes reception, it seems as if Aster has really figured out how to make it work. Plus seeing Pascal and Phoenix square off is going to be fun for audiences.
The film is described as follows: “In May of 2020, a standoff between a small-town sheriff (Joaquin Phoenix) and mayor (Pedro Pascal) sparks a powder keg as neighbor is pitted against neighbor in Eddington, New Mexico.”
Cannot wait to see how this movie is going to make me want to vote against Pedro Pascal because that seems impossible. But it is fascinating to see how this movie will differ from Aster’s past work. We know he knows how to frighten us but will Eddington work as a dark comedy?
The full cast includes Phoenix, Pascal, Luke Grimes, Deirdre O’Connell, Micheal Ward, Amélie Hoeferle, Clifton Collins Jr., William Belleau, with Austin Butler and Emma Stone. Eddington will hits theaters on July 18.
