Argos to stop printing its catalogue after 47 years - and one billion copies

Argos has said it will no longer be printing its iconic catalogue and will instead list products online.

It comes after almost 1 billion of them were printed over the 47 years since it launched.

Simon Roberts, chief executive of  Argos’  parent company Sainsbury’s, said: “As most customers are now browsing and ordering online, we have decided that the time is right to stop printing the Argos catalogue.

“Removing the printed catalogue helps us to flex our range and offers and to be more competitive on price.”

Two editions of the catalogue have been printed each year since 1973 - letting customers browse in store or take home with them.

At one point it was the most printed publication in Europe.

But as times changed, it became less and less relevant, with Argos saying most customers now shop online with branches also now using tablets to let people see what's available to buy.

It's not quite the end of the catalogue, however, with a small number of stores continuing to use the laminated catalogues until January as digital screens are installed.

Argos added that its Christmas gift guide will continue to be physically printed to take home - letting children continue to circle their ideal gifts.

Sainsbury’s chief marketing officer Mark Given said: “Just as our customers’ tastes have changed over the years, so have their shopping habits.

"We’re seeing an increasing shift towards digital shopping, using our mobile app, website and in-store browsers.

"Closing the book on the catalogue will help us focus on delivering exciting and inspiring digital shopping experiences to meet the changing needs of our customers, both in-store and online.”
