Argos announces plan for reopening some branches

Argos says it will reopen some of its stand-alone stores later this month.

The move comes after the Government changed the lockdown rules to allow non-essential retailers to reopen from June 15.

Argos, which has 700 standalone stores across the UK, will reopen 140 branches from June 15.

Stores will only be carrying out collections and returns to begin with.

Argos concessions within Sainsbury’s supermarkets have remained open for customers to click and collect items.

Argos has advised shoppers to only pick up items from its concessions during a Sainsbury's food or essentials shop.

The retailer also says it will use what it has learned from concessions in the standalone stores to keep both staff and customers safe once they reopen.

It is also looking into introducing Perspex screens in the reopened branches.

A Sainsbury’s spokesman said: “We are looking at what the government’s announcement around non-essential retailers possibly being able to open from June 15 in England means for our business.

“To ensure we get this right, we are preparing to open a first phase of around 140 standalone Argos stores to customers for collections and returns.

"Our colleagues will be working hard over the coming weeks to make sure robust social distancing and safety measures are in place.

“We will keep our customers and colleagues updated and we are watching what the Government says closely.”
