Argos adamant on future of city centre shop despite approval of 10-storey student flats

Argos have remained adamant that its flagship store in Nottingham city centre will remain despite the approval of 10-storey student accommodation in its building.

Planning permission was granted for a total of 275 student beds to be created above the store on 37-41 Lower Parliament Street on October 15.

The application site is currently occupied by Argos with a ground floor retail frontage and warehouses and servicing to the rear.

However, the retailer insisted to Nottinghamshire Live that they had no plans to close the branch.

A spokesperson confirmed: "We have not current plans to close our Lower Parliament Street store."

Permission has been given for Bmor, the developers behind the plans, to demolish the rear storage building, as well as for the refurbishment and conversion of the former showroom building and new development to provide purpose-built student accommodation.

Nottingham Civic Society "welcomes" the retention and restoration of the building but has some reservations about the design.

Doubts had been cast previously over the future of the Argos store, with a report in the planning application for the development reading: "However Argos’ lease is shortly to expire and they have indicated they do not want to regear or extend their lease at present.

"The business is accelerating the integration of Argos into existing Sainsburys stores and a reduction in the number of standalone retail units they occupy. The site will therefore become vacant in the near future."

This was dismissed by the retailer at the time.
