Argentinean club Independiente 'chasing Arsenal for money' as transfer clause triggered

A report in Argentina claims Arsenal are holding out on a payment of €500,000 to the former club of their goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez that the South Americans say is owed to them through an agreement drawn up 10 years ago.

With Petr Cech having retired in the summer, Martinez has established himself as the Gunners' No.2 stopper behind Bernd Leno this season.

The 27-year-old made his 11th appearance of the season in Monday night's FA Cup fifth round victory over Portsmouth at Fratton Park, with all of those games coming in cup competitions.

Martinez has had to remain patient during his time at the Emirates Stadium, during which he had embarked on six different loan spells at Oxford United, Sheffield Wednesday, Rotherham United, Wolves , Getafe and Reading.

Having impressed at the Royals last season, Martinez has also been a fairly steady figure for the Gunners whenever called upon in the current campaign, keeping five clean sheets in his 11 appearances.

The goalkeeper has made 24 Gunners appearances in all, and Argentinean publication Doble Amarilla - cited here by Sport Witness - claim that Independiente are now chasing up an extra payment in the £1.35million deal which took him to the Gunners in 2010.

They claim they were due that payment in November last year after Martinez had played 10 senior games as a starter for the club, but Arsenal are said to have rejected the request as they felt the Europa League wasn't involved in the deal.

Martinez has now reached that number of starts through other competitions though, and so the report states that Independiente are now "looking for money" and hope to get "what's owed to them" by the Gunners.
