Argentina v England live: Result and final score as George Ford shines on 100th cap

England winger Tom Roebuck scored two tries and veteran flyhalf George Ford delivered a virtuoso performance in a 35-12 win over Argentina in the first test in La Plata on Saturday.

Freddie Steward and substitute Cadan Murley also touched down as 32-year-old Ford, celebrating his 100th cap, kicked two penalties, a drop goal and three conversions.

With 14 internationals away on British & Irish Lions duty in Australia, a depleted England side started as underdogs against the Pumas, who beat the Lions in Dublin two weeks ago

A gutsy defensive display, however, was complimented by Ford’s astute leadership in a performance that will add to the debate over whether he, rather than Owen Farrell, should been called up as a Lions injury replacement.

England showed resolute defence in the first half, three times holding up the ball to deny Argentina tries as the hosts crossed the visitors’ goal line but could not dot down.

Yellow cards for lock Alex Coles and debutant Seb Atkinson within six minutes left England down to 13 men but despite this disadvantage, they took the lead from their first foray into Argentina territory when Ford sent over a 20th-minute drop kick for the only points of the first half.

After the break, England went on the attack and scored three tries in the first 10 minutes of the second half to build a commanding 22-0 lead, to a cacophony of jeers for the home side from their supporters.

Roebuck, in only his second international, went over in the corner one minute into the second half, followed four minutes later by a try for Steward on his return to the England line-up as Ford’s pass allowed him to burst through a gap in the home defence.

Roebuck strolled in for his second try after Ford again pulled the strings in a simple move down the line.

The jeers turned to cheers of hope as Argentina attempted a fightback with a 53rd-minute try for veteran flanker Pablo Matera, marking a record-equalling 110th appearance for the Pumas, and a forward inspired break finished off by lock Pedro Rubiolo.

That reduced the deficit to 10 points but Argentine mistakes handed England penalties at key moments and Ford slotted over two penalties to keep the tourists comfortably ahead before Murley’s late try made sure of victory.

The second test is next Saturday in San Juan.

England take a 1-0 lead in the series and will look to wrap things up next weekend at the Estadio San Juan del Bicentenario, with kick-off set for the same time.

England fly-half George Ford:

22:53 , Ciara Fearn

“We just wanted to perform well and win tonight. It is all about the team as always. We understand how difficult it is here in Argentina so it is a great win for us.

“We were under pressure in the first half; we gave away too many penalties and could not get out of our half.

“We had to make sure second half we got out of our half and create some try-scoring opportunities, which we did early in the second half.

“We have to back it up next week and we know Argentina will come back at us. Another challenge that we will look forward to.”

Argentina's captain, Julian Montoya:

22:48 , Ciara Fearn

“In the first half we had a lot of opportunities that we did not score points from. Then the first five minutes of the second half we were very poor so we need to look at ourselves and be better.

“Congratulations to the debutants and we need to be ready for next weekend. Credit to England as they played well.

“We cannot have those gaps where we conceded very easy points.”

England's dominant display

22:42 , Ciara Fearn

At full time, Argentina held the majority of possession with 59% compared to England’s 41%. Argentina also led in carries with 149 to England’s 99.

However, England made significantly more tackles, completing 197 compared to Argentina’s 101, despite missing slightly more tackles (26 versus 21).

Both teams conceded six penalties each, but England received two yellow cards while Argentina had none.

Turnovers were evenly matched with five won apiece, though Argentina lost more turnovers (21 to England’s 13).

In terms of line breaks, Argentina managed six compared to England’s three.

Full-time! England 35-12 Argentina

22:36 , Ciara Fearn

While England’s attack certainly found more rhythm in the second half, their defence has been consistently strong all game.

Even with the result secured, they continued to demonstrate great commitment from the front line.

Tom Roebuck takes the man of the match award.

Try! England (Murley) 33-12 Argentina

22:32 , Ciara Fearn

75 mins: England put in a strong scrum just outside Argentina’s 22, overpowering their opponents and gaining a penalty advantage.

What a way to finish an incredible night for England. Deep inside Argentina’s 22, England shifts the ball wide to the left, where Murley beats Isgro and fakes a pass to his left, deceiving Carreras.

Isgro manages to bring Murley down briefly, but he stays on his feet to cross the line and score.

Ford then nails a difficult conversion.

England 28-12 Argentina

22:26 , Ciara Fearn

72 mins: England hold the ball inside Argentina’s 22 and enjoy a penalty advantage after the hosts are penalised for offside.

However, the opportunity comes to nothing, and play returns to the original penalty against Piccardo for offside. England opt to kick for the corner rather than taking the points.

England secure the lineout and form a maul that drives toward the Argentina try line but eventually collapses. Referee Angus Gardner rules the maul went down off England, awarding the scrum to Argentina.

England 28-12 Argentina

22:24 , Ciara Fearn

70 mins: Van Poortvliet launches a powerful kick from just outside his own 22 sending the ball soaring deep into Argentina’s 22 before it bounces out of play - an exceptional 50-22 execution.

Penalty! England (Ford) 28-12 Argentina

22:23 , Ciara Fearn

68 mins: Rodrigo Isgro is penalised for a no-arms tackle on George near halfway. George stays down for treatment after the hit, clearly in some discomfort.

It looked like the kind of challenge the TMO might review for a possible yellow, but it’s ruled as just a penalty. George is back up, and England will take another shot at goal.

George Ford secures the extra points again.

Penalty! England (Ford) 25-12 Argentina

22:16 , Ciara Fearn

63 mins: England are awarded a penalty on Argentina’s 10-metre line after Piccardo interferes with the scrum-half. Ford points to the posts - a smart decision to take the points on offer.

Ford secures the extras.

Try! England 22-12 Argentina (Rubiolo)

22:13 , Ciara Fearn

60 mins: Rubiolo Caps Off Brilliant Argentine Attack. What a stunning try from Argentina - fluid, fast and clinical in execution.

A fantastic off-load with brilliant support, no chance for recovery from any England defenders. Carreras’ secures the conversion

Willis has come off and is replaced by Dombrandt. Pepper is on for his debut for Underhill.

England 22-5 Argentina

22:09 , Ciara Fearn

57 mins: Argentina replacement loosehead Gallo bursts through from deep inside his own half, showing impressive pace as he charges up to the edge of England’s 22.

The ball is then moved out to the right, but a knock-on halts the attack, giving Ford the chance to clear deep into Argentine territory.

England 22-5 Argentina

22:06 , Ciara Fearn

57 mins: England make some changes: Rodd, Opoku-Fordjour and van Poortvliet are all on for Baxter, Heyes and Spencer.

Try! England 22-5 Argentina (Matera)

22:04 , Ciara Fearn

52 mins: Argentina finally get over for their first try of the night. The break begins down the right flank with Elizalde appearing to send a possibly forward offload to Isgro.

Isgro then chips ahead, Argentina regather possession inside England’s 22. The ball is worked wide through a cross field kick to the left, where Cordero collects it just before being forced into touch.

He manages to off-load to Matera, who finishes the move. Carreras misses the conversion.

England 22-0 Argentina

22:00 , Ciara Fearn

50 mins: Ewels appears to have suffered a dislocated finger prompting Cunningham-South to come on in his place.

Try! England (Roebuck) 22-0 Argentina

21:57 , Ciara Fearn

48 mins: England have come out flying in the second half and are completely dominating Argentina. From a lineout just outside the 22, Atkinson delivers a perfectly timed pass to Ford, setting off a slick sequence of offloads that nearly sees Roebuck go over.

After a few close range carries, Heyes picks out Roebuck in space on the blindside and the Sale winger finishes expertly in the corner. Ford adds the extras.

Try! England (Steward) 15-0 Argentina

21:55 , Ciara Fearn

46 mins: Perfect timing from Steward. England’s scrum puts in a dominant display. Following an England knock-on near Argentina’s 10-metre line, their pack drives powerfully to win a penalty.

Ford nails the kick to the corner, setting up another strong attacking chance.

Although England had a penalty advantage, they didn’t need it - Argentina were caught offside. With the advantage still in their favour deep inside Argentina’s 22, Ford delivers an outstanding flat pass to Steward who crosses the line unchallenged from close range.

Ford adds the extra points, extending England’s lead to 15 points.

England 8-0 Argentina

21:50 , Ciara Fearn

At halftime, England lead Argentina 3-0, despite Argentina holding the majority of possession with 58% to England’s 42%.

Argentina also lead in passes (97 to 56) and carries (82 to 45), as well as line breaks with two compared to England’s none.

However, England have forced more turnovers, three to Argentina’s one, and have made more total kicks, 26 to 20.

Try! England (Roebuck) 8-0 Argentina

21:49 , Ciara Fearn

41 mins: Argentina make a costly error early in the second half, kicking the ball directly out of bounds even after retreating into their own 22.

This hands England a valuable lineout in a strong attacking position. The pressure pays off as the first try of the match goes England’s way-a perfect start to the second half.

Roebuck powers past several Argentina defenders to score, even as they try to stop him. Ford misses the conversion, but England lead for now.

Half-time! England 3-0 Argentina

21:32 , Ciara Fearn

40 mins: England lead at half time in La Plata. Centurion George Ford is proving to be the standout player and the key difference between the two teams in a match that has so far lacked sharpness and clear scoring opportunities.

England’s defence stood firm in the first half, stopping Argentina short on three occasions. Argentina blew their chances in the first half despite numerous trips into England’s 22.

Growing frustration

21:29 , Ciara Fearn

37 mins: Bertranou sends a clever chip kick from halfway that Isgro gathers. Breaking through Steward’s tackle, he charges toward England’s 22 and attempts a pass to Matera, but it’s off target and rolls out of bounds.

A satisfactory first half for England despite two players going to the sin-bin.

Strong England defence

21:26 , Ciara Fearn

35 mins: Argentina blow another chance. They inch to within five metres of England’s line once more but fail to deliver the crucial breakthrough.

England’s defence is outstanding, holding firm and contesting fiercely at the breakdown.

England 3-0 Argentina

21:23 , Ciara Fearn

33 mins: Isgro powers past several England defenders before offloading to Isa, driving Argentina well inside England’s 22. The visitors’ defence will need to raise their game once more with Argentina pressing deep.

Seb Atkinson returns from the bin.

England ambition

21:21 , Ciara Fearn

29 mins: For one of the first times in the match, England are on the attack inside Argentina’s 22. They move down the left side, but Roebuck’s knock-on just over five metres from the line brings their momentum to a halt. The visitors look threatening.

Knock-on Argentina!

21:18 , Ciara Fearn

27 mins: Following an Argentine knock-on just outside England’s 22, the visitors secured a scrum penalty.

Given how much possession Argentina has enjoyed, particularly deep inside England’s territory - England will be pleased with their current position.

England are playing with ambition even with a man down.

Argentina held-up again

21:13 , Ciara Fearn

22 mins: Off a lineout deep in England’s 22, Piccardo charges forward and is tackled just short of the try line.

On the following phase Argentina are held up once more which is the third time this half.

Alex Coles has returned from his yellow-card.

Penalty! England 3-0 Argentina

21:10 , Ciara Fearn

20 mins: On his 100th appearance, Ford puts England in front and gets some points on the board.

Coles' yellow card stands, no upgrade. England are pulled for offside at the halfway line, and referee Angus Gardner has seen enough. Atkinson is shown a yellow and sent to the sin bin, leaving England down to 13 players.

England 0-0 Argentina

21:06 , Ciara Fearn

18 mins: England are penalised for failing to roll away, roughly midway between the halfway line and their own 22.

Referee Angus Gardner issues a warning to England over repeated infringements with Slade at fault this time.

Argentina point to the posts and will go for the three points. Carreras doesn’t land the points.

Yellow-card for England!

21:03 , Ciara Fearn

16 mins: Alex Coles goes into the tackle too upright, resulting in head-on-head contact. It’s deemed enough for a yellow card, with an off-field review to follow.

Argentina waste no time, taking a quick tap just five metres from the line.

Argentina are stopped just short as they're held up over the line, but England are caught offside giving the hosts yet another penalty.

Argentina attack

21:01 , Ciara Fearn

15 mins: Carreras spots space in behind and sends through a clever kick nearly pulling off a brilliant 50-22.

George Ford scrambles back just in time to prevent it from going out.

He takes a moment to gather the ball retreating behind his own try line before getting a pressured clearance away, but it only finds touch inside England’s 22.

Argentina are threatening deep in England’s 22 and come within inches of the try line, but play is brought back for a penalty in their favour. Meanwhile, the TMO is reviewing possible foul play involving Coles.

England 0-0 Argentina

20:57 , Ciara Fearn

11 mins: Henry Slade takes a heavy, perfectly timed hit from Rodrigo Isgro just inside Argentina’s half and loses control of the ball. A huge impact.

Kicking contest

20:55 , Ciara Fearn

9 mins: There’s been a lot of kicking as both teams cautiously test each other out. Ben Spencer was ready to launch his third box kick early on, but Argentina quickly closed him down to reduce his time with the ball.

Spencer goes for another high box kick and although Argentina struggles to secure it cleanly, England capitalises on the error.

The defensive competition between both teams is really tight, no gaps and there’s plenty of handling errors as a result.

Argentina lineout

20:51 , Ciara Fearn

5 mins: Freddie Steward kicks the ball out of bounds from within his own 22, but since Ford’s pass to him was judged to have come from just outside that area, Argentina will take the lineout inside England’s 22.

Argentina are applying pressure near the edge of England’s 22, but the visitors manage to turn over the ball. After a few more phases, Spencer launches a clearance kick. Curry made a crucial interception, stealing the ball from Carreras.

They are putting Argentina under all sorts of pressure.

England 0-0 Argentina

20:47 , Ciara Fearn

3 mins: Argentina earns the opening penalty after England are penalised for failing to support body weight at the breakdown.

Slade was responsible, and Argentina opts to kick towards England’s 22-metre area.

Elizalde, a rising star in the backline has earned his first international cap and will take the No. 15 jersey.

Elsewhere today...

20:34 , Lawrence Ostlere

Debutant Tommy O'Brien crossed for two early tries to set the platform for Ireland’s comfortable 34-5 win over hosts Georgia in their one-off test in Tbilisi.

Captain Craig Casey and loose forward Nick Timoney scored the other tries for Ireland while flyhalf Sam Prendergast contributed 14 points with a flawless haul of four conversions and two penalties.

Georgia’s only score came on the stroke of halftime from Tornike Jalagonia as they struggled to compete with an Ireland side missing 15 players on British & Irish Lions duty in Australia.

Also missing were coach Andy Farrell and Simon Easterby, his Six Nations stand-in, with former captain Paul O’Connell taking charge of the trip to the Mikheil Meshki Stadium.

Leinster winger O’Brien enjoyed a dream start to his international career as he snatched a chip forward from Prendergast to score after two minutes, adding his second in the corner six minutes later.

Jalagonia’s try reduced the halftime lead to 14-5 but straight after the resumption Casey went over to stretch Ireland's advantage before Prendergast kicked two penalties to keep up the pressure on the hosts.

Timoney’s try came 10 minutes from time as he finished off Prendergast's low cross kick in the corner.

Intriguing Argentina back three

20:15 , Harry Latham-Coyle

It’s a really fun Argentina back three today, with the experienced Santiago Cordero joining the less seasoned Rodrigo Isgro and Benjamin Elizalde. Isgro, as he showed for Harlequins this season, is a supreme athlete and utterly outstanding in the air, but England may feel like they can get at the other two members of the trio, with Cordero not vertically blessed and Elizalde inexperienced.

Steve Borthwick has picked three of the best aerial operators in the country in his side, with all of Tom Roebuck, Will Muir and Freddie Steward willing and able chasers. Expect Ben Spencer and George Ford to go to the skies regularly.

George Ford joins the club

20:05 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Jason Leonard had to wait a long while before he had male company in the England 100 club, but centurions seem to be coming more and more regularly now. Ben Youngs, Dan Cole, Owen Farrell, Courtney Lawes and Danny Care all joined the ranks relatively recently and Jamie George raised his bat during the Six Nations earlier this year.

Is La Plata where Ford would have expected this landmark to come? Perhaps not, but the ultimate team-first man deserves his day in the sun, even if he has tried to keep the focus on others as he likes to.

Argentina vs England

19:55 , Harry Latham-Coyle

The 2017 England tour of Argentina is best remembered for the emergence of the so-called “Kamikaze Kids”, Sam Underhill and Tom Curry coming through to solve England’s issue on the openside and help drive the side to the 2019 World Cup final under Eddie Jones. Underhill is back in harness eight years on with a different twin opposite him - Ben would probably have made his debut on that last tour ahead of his brother if not for an untimely back injury. England do have now real depth, with so many talented players vying for the starting seven shirt - Guy Pepper is another among the replacements. Remember that all of Tom Curry, Henry Pollock and Ben Earl are on tour with the Lions - frightening!

Team news - England

19:45 , Harry Latham-Coyle

George Ford wins his 100th cap at fly half, the playmaker again unfortunate not to be a Lions tourist but becoming just the eighth man to reach the mark for England. He’s joined in co-captaining the side by another of that octet, with Jamie George stationed at hooker, while Henry Slade adds further experience in midfield. The newer faces include two starting debutants: centre Seb Atkinson has impressed for Gloucester over the last couple of seasons while rangy runner Will Muir completes an array of fine aerial operators in a back three that also includes Tom Roebuck and Freddie Steward.

On the bench, Guy Pepper is another first-capper in waiting - the Bath flanker is one of six forwards as Steve Borthwick continues to explore his forward depth. Chandler Cunningham-South’s development as a lock option appears set to continue with no specialist cover for Charlie Ewels and Alex Coles among the replacements.

England XV: 1 Fin Baxter, 2 Jamie George (co-capt.), 3 Joe Heyes; 4 Charlie Ewels, 5 Alex Coles; 6 Ben Curry, 7 Sam Underhill, 8 Tom Willis; 9 Ben Spencer, 10 George Ford (co-capt.); 11 Will Muir, 12 Seb Atkinson, 13 Henry Slade, 14 Tom Roebuck; 15 Freddie Steward.

Replacements: 16 Theo Dan, 17 Bevan Rodd, 18 Asher Opoku-Fordjour, 19 Chandler Cunningham-South, 20 Guy Pepper, 21 Alex Dombrandt; 22 Jack van Poortvliet, 23 Cadan Murley.

Team news - Argentina

19:40 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Argentina make six changes from the side that beat the British and Irish Lions in Dublin, most notably in the halves. The uber-impressive Tomas Albornoz is out with Santiago Carreras sliding forward to No 10 from full-back, while the experienced Gonzalo Bertranou steps in for Gonzalo Garcia. The relocation of Carreras brings about a debut for Bristol’s Benjamin Elizalde, who is a 21-year-old of considerable promise.

In the back row, the hard-carrying Facundo Isa combines with Pablo Matera and Juan Martin Gonzalez in a trio of real prowess, and Pedro Delgado takes the place of Joel Sclavi on the tighthead. Fly hlaf Nicolas Roger could make his debut from the bench.

Argentina XV: 1 Mayco Vivas, 2 Julian Montoya (capt.), 3 Pedro Delgado; 4 Lucas Paulos, 5 Pedro Rubiolo; 6 Pablo Matera, 7 Juan Martin Gonzalez, 8 Facundo Isa; 9 Gonzalo Bertranou, 10 Santiago Carreras; 11 Santiago Cordero, 12 Justo Piccardo, 13 Lucio Cinti, 14 Rodrigo Isgro; 15 Benjamin Elizalde.

Replacements: 16 Bautista Bernasconi, 17 Thomas Gallo, 18 Francisco Coria Marchetti, 19 Santiago Grondona, 20 Joaquin Moro; 21 Simon Benitez Cruze, 22 Nicolas Roger, 23 Matias Moroni.

Argentina vs England

Today’s venue is usually the home of football club Estudiantes, the Estadio Jorge Luis Hirschi likely to be bouncing with Argentina generally able to count on extremely vocal support even when the stands aren’t totally full. Those I’ve spoken to in La Plata haven’t necessarily been that impressed by the town more widely, though the cathedral is worth a visit, if anyone happens to find themselves down there.

Steve Borthwick reveals one key for England to beat Argentina this summer

19:20 , Harry Latham-Coyle

England will need to show that they cope with Argentina’s transition game if they are to succeed away to Los Pumas, according to head coach Steve Borthwick.

Borthwick and his team are in South America for a two-Test series against the world’s fifth-ranked side before travelling onto Washington DC to take on the USA.

And any danger that they might take the task lightly was quickly extinguished when Argentina ran in three tries in a historic 28-24 win over the British and Irish Lions in Dublin in their opening fixture.

Fly half Ford will lead the side in combination with another centurion as Jamie George provides yet more experience in the front row, while Henry Slade, Freddie Steward and Sam Underhill are among those to provide experience elsewhere.

A hectic day of international rugby action concludes in La Plata, just down the coast from Buenos Aires, as Argentina host England in the first clash of a mightily fun two-Test affair. The Pumas have never beaten their visitors in a series but surely will fancy their chances here with a significant English contingent away with the British and Irish Lions.

Kick off is at 8.40pm BST.
