Argentina vs Australia prediction and odds ahead of 2022 FIFA World Cup round of 16 clash

Argentina ran out Group C winners and set themselves up with a round of 16 tie with Australia who surprised everyone with their impressive performances in Group D to secure the runners-up spot ahead of Tunisia and Denmark.

La Albiceleste are the favourites going into this match at 1/5 with Betfred while Australia are long outsiders at 14/1 and a draw is 11/2. This is the first ever World Cup meeting between the two sides and the first since they met in a friendly back in September 2007 which Argentina won 1-0.

Lionel Messi and co suffered embarrassment at the first hurdle losing to Saudi Arabia - widely tipped as the group's whipping boys - 1-0 in a shock defeat which gave the victorious nation an additional holiday in their homeland. However, they responded strongly with wins against Poland and Mexico to put themselves back on course as one of the main contenders and favourites to win the trophy in little over a couple of weeks time.
