Argentina legend Diego Maradona claims he was abducted by a UFO

Argentina legend Diego Maradona has claimed he was abducted by a UFO after "a few too many drinks".

The 59-year-old, who helped his country to win the World Cup in 1986 and is widely considered one of the greatest players of all time, said he went missing for three days.

“Why make things up?" he replied in an interview with Argentinian channel TyC Sports (via The Sun ) when asked if he believed in UFOs.

"Once, after a few too many drinks, I was missing from home for three days.

"I got home and said that UFOs had taken me. I said ‘They took me, I can’t tell you about it’.”

Maradona, who played for the likes of Barcelona and Napoli during his career, is currently manager of Gimnasia y Esgrima in his homeland.

He took charge of the club in September with the task of keeping them in Argentina's top flight.

He left his post last month over the Gimnasia's presidential election, but returned after just two days stating he hoped the club "deliver everything they promised."

Gimnasia were bottom of the 24-team league upon Maradona's arrival, but they now sit 21st with 14 points from their first 16 matches.

It is his first coaching job in his homeland since 2010 - when he left his position as head coach of the national team following the World Cup in South Africa.

His Argentina were beaten 4-0 by Germany in the quarter-finals of the competition, with a brace from Miroslav Klose helping Joachim Low's side to a comfortable victory.

In the same interview, Maradona said he found current captain and Barcelona star Lionel Messi crying in the shower in the aftermath of the heavy loss.

He told TyC Sports (via The Sun ): "I saw him crying in the shower when we lost 4-0 to Germany while many players were already looking for flights back home."
