Argentina fans celebrate World Cup victory on O’Connell Street after thrilling win

Argentina’s World Cup victory captivated fans across the world - and Dubliners were quick to partake in the celebratory mood.

The month long tournament drew to a close last night, with Argentina triumphing over France in a 4-2 win on penalties. The exhilarating match had fans on the edge of their seats as it went into extra time, then penalty shootouts.

The result had football fans in a frenzy, as crowds took to O’Connell Street to celebrate the win. Jubilant fans were captured on video holding up a passing Dublin Bus, as they descended on the street.

However, drivers also appeared to share the joyous mood, as car horns and celebratory shouts rang out across the packed street. The commotion centred around the Spire, with several fans sporting Argentinian jerseys gathered in the crowds.

The win marks the end of a rather unusual season for tournament viewers as it was also the first-ever World Cup to be held during the Northern Hemisphere’s winter months.

The decision to host the games in Qatar also sparked fierce controversy, partially due to the nation’s stance on LGBTQ rights. The treatment of migrant workers in the decade since Qatar was granted host status also came under question as the games commenced.

Roy Keane, who provided commentary for the games, praised the quality of football witnessed on screens for the past few weeks. However, he admitted that the Qatar tournament would forever be “stained” by alleged human rights abuses.

He later applauded Argentina for their stellar performance in the final, admitting they had earned the right to a jubilant celebration. The former footballer had been critical of teams over-celebrating in previous matches, blasting the Brazilian team’s post-victory dancing as being particularly “disrespectful.”
