Israeli intelligence sources said Tuesday that the Mossad Israeli intelligence agency has contributed to thwarting a "terrorist operation" that Lebanon’s Hezbollah party was planning against Jewish targets in Buenos Aires.
The sources said that the Mossad had obtained “verified and accurate” information about the group’s members - two Lebanese brothers and their cousin - who were recruited by Hezbollah and planned to carry out the operation.
The information provided by the Mossad to Argentina’s intelligence services has led to the arrest of the members of the group, late on Friday, in a secret apartment, where many weapons were found.
The detainees admitted that the operation was directed against “Jewish targets.” They will be charged on suspicion of having contacts with Hezbollah, as well as planning to perpetrate a terrorist attack.
But Israeli sources have not ruled out suspicions that they planned to target the G20 summit to be held later this month in Buenos Aires.
The Argentine Ministry of Security said that a large number of weapons was found, in addition to explosives.
According to local police in Argentina, documents in Arabic, bearing the flag and symbols of Hezbollah, were also seized.
