Aretha Franklin funeral: When does it start, who will be performing and how can I stream it in the UK?

Aretha Franklin’s funeral takes place today (31 August) in Detroit, with dozens of famous performers scheduled to attend the ceremony. Here’s everything you need to know about the event.

What time does the funeral start?

The Queen of Soul’s funeral begins at 08.30 local time (13.30 BST) and ends at 15.00 EDT (20.00 BST). The ceremony will begin with a viewing that'll feature the singer’s recordings being played. The service itself begins at 10.00 EDT (15.00 BST).

Where will the funeral take place?

The funeral will take place at the Greater Grace Temple in Detroit – the same church location as Rosa Parks’s funeral in 2005 at which Franklin sang. The church's pastor, Bishop Charles H. Ellis, will officiate the service, with Reverend Robert Smith Jr. serving as a co-officiant.

Who will perform?

Ariana Grande, Stevie Wonder and Chaka Khan are among the stars who will perform at Aretha Franklin’s funeral. Other confirmed performers include Jennifer Hudson, Faith Hill, Shirley Caesar, Yolanda Adams, Marvin Sapp, and Vanessa Bell Armstrong. A host of gospel singers will also perform at the service to reflect Franklin's strong ties to the genre.
