Area of Wirral with the most Covid-19 cases

One part of Birkenhead has more covid cases than anywhere else in Wirral, but the virus is still declining across the borough.

In the week up to April 2, Rock Ferry registered seven infections, whereas last week the ward had fewer than five.

Areas with the next highest number of covid cases in Wirral included Prenton (six), Bromborough (six), Birkenhead and Tranmere (five) and Bebington (five).

Everywhere else in Wirral had fewer than five cases in the seven days up to April 2.

Comparing the figures to last week, six Wirral wards saw cases rise, four saw no change, but 12 of the borough’s 22 wards registered fewer cases.

The positivity rate measures the percentage of tests which return a positive result and it is seen as a good measure of how widely spread the virus is.

In Wirral, this week’s figures showed a positivity rate of 0.7%, that is the lowest recorded in the borough since August 14 last year when the rate was 0.6%.

It is dramatic progress from early January when a rate of over 20% was recorded and the virus was spiralling out of control.

Looking at figures for Wirral as a whole, which cover the week up to April 5, the borough had 46 cases at a rate of 14 per 100,000.

That is down on the rate of 23 per 100,000 recorded in the previous week’s figures and is the lowest Wirral has recorded since August 24 last year.

St Helens has also seen its rate fall, from 37 to 24, but that is not quite as low as Sefton's rate, which declined from 27 to 18 this week.

Halton’s infection rate is now 22, down from 43 last week.
