Area near Bristol sees record rise in coronavirus cases

A further 140 people have been diagnosed with coronavirus in North Somerset in one day - the highest number since the pandemic hit.

The latest breakdown of infections shows 5,515 positive lab tests have been returned in this district since March.

This area's previous highest daily total was on November 10 when 121 infections were recorded.

Bristol's daily cases continued to rise today, with 179 being reported.

South Gloucestershire saw a jump of 101, bringing its total to 8,124 since the virus first hit.

Deaths

Two more people have died after contracting coronavirus in Bristol, taking the total number of fatalities within 28 days of a positive Covid-19 test to 255.

One coronavirus-related death has also been registered in South Gloucestershire in the past 24 hours. This takes the total number of deaths within 28 days of a positive Covid-19 test in this area to 223.

North Somerset reported another Covid death, with the total in this area rising to 184.

Case rate

Bristol's Covid rate has climbed once again today to 193.4 per 100,000 people, after 896 cases were confirmed in the seven days to December 23 - the latest available data.

North Somerset still has the highest rate in our area of 210.2, and South Gloucestershire's is 192.2.

All of these rates are significantly below the national average, which has soared to 401.9.

Hospital admissions

Public Health England's data shows 12 new Covid patients were admitted to Bristol's hospital on December 20. This brings the city's total number of Covid inpatients to 165.

UK cases

The UK's coronavirus death toll has risen by 357 in the past 24 hours, with a staggering 41,385 new cases - a record high.

The previous highest daily infection rate occurred on December 22 when the UK recorded 36,804 new cases.
