Are you smarter than an eight-year-old? This times table test will decide

Despite it being a big part of our school life many people struggle with maths in their adult life.

Whether you constantly need a calculator or use all your fingers and toes to work out a sum, it is not always easy as it looks to do maths. But for English school pupils currently in Year 4, they will be put under the test in a couple of months time, WalesOnline reports.

Exams will be held in June for eight and nine-year-olds to see how well they know their multiplication tables. Each pupils will be asked 25 questions and will only have six seconds to answer each sum.

But how well do you know your times tables? To find out, take our interactive quiz below to see if your skills match up with an eight-year-old's.

Introduced in 2019, the check is designed to help ensure children in primary school know their times tables up to 12 off by heart. According to the government, knowledge of times tables helps children to solve problems quickly and flexibly, and allows them to tackle more complex mathematics later on in school.

Former School Standards Minister Nick Gibb said at the launch: "Maths touches so many aspects of everyday life so it’s hugely important that young people are equipped with the ability to perform simple calculations in their heads. Not only will this help them cope with the challenges of maths at secondary school, it will also stand them in good stead for the rest of their lives.

"That’s why we are bringing in this new check – to make sure all pupils leave primary school knowing their times tables by heart. Just as the phonics screening check has driven up literacy rates in primary schools, so this check will have a similar effect for basic maths."
