Are you seeking a second passport or nationality because of concerns over the UK’s EU status?

With Britain’s membership of the EU more precarious than at any point for 40 years, we want to hear from people actively considering moving or getting citizenship to cover for all eventualities.

David Cameron’s commitment to having a referendum on Britain’s membership of the EU, could result in the UK’s relationship with the Europe changing dramatically. It’s unclear what this might mean for EU migrants living in the UK - and for Brits living in Europe. Currently there are 14 million EU citizens residing in another member state and a British exit could require a whole new set of rules governing economic migration, visas and leave to remain.

Free movement – that’s the ability to live, work and study anywhere in the Union could be restricted and future migration into and out of the UK could theroretically be regulated by British national law. In an extreme scenario, British people could end up having to apply for visas every time they travel across the Channel. And Brits already living in other EU countries such as Spain may face integration rules, such as a requirement to speak the language of the host country, before gaining long-term residency status. Access to education, healthcare and welfare could also be in doubt.

We’d like to hear from people who’re concerned about what a future UK exit from the EU would mean for them – both Brits living in Europe and EU migrants to the UK. Do you feel it’s important to get dual nationality now? Have your applied for a second passport? Are you making plans to acquire citizenship? We’d also like you to tell us about your situation – are you married or in a relationship with someone from another European member state? Perhaps you’re working in the UK but your family resides elsewhere. We’ll be looking for contributions to include in an article reporting on these issues.
