Are you brave enough? 'Haunted' North East pub to let up to 30 people spend the night

It is supposed to be the most haunted pub in Gateshead, where glasses fly off the table and things often go bump in the night.

And something very spooky started to happen this week at The Schooner - although there wasn't a ghoul in sight.

It started with a sudden phone call. Then another. Then another.

"By the end we've had well over 500 - it is probably approaching a thousand," said a manager, who asked not to be named.

"We have been getting a phone call roughly every two minutes."

But these calls weren't some evil entity trying to make contact from the other side.

They were amateur ghostbusters, who had stumbled across 18 month old ChronicleLive story.

In it, former landlord Adrian Marley invited anybody brave enough to spend the night at the "full-on haunted pub".

"People started calling from Glasgow, then Wiltshire, asking if they could spend the night," added the manager.

Some were even offering money.

But unwilling to cash in on the pub's reputation - which the new owners were aware of due to an episode of Alan Robson's Night Owls ' - they are offering anybody brave enough to stay the night the chance to do so.

"Due to the almost overwhelming interest in the history of The Schooner and mostly the haunted element we’ve decided to allow those interested to come and have a look around themselves," posted thee pub on Facebook.

"As over 400 people have now expressed interest we are doing overnight stays for groups of 25/30."

And the pub won't make a penny in profit. The stay costs £20-a-head but that covers the cost of two staff to supervise plus a brekkie at sunrise.

"I'm an absolute skeptic, and I think this is all nonsense," said the manager.

"It would be wonderful for business if someone did find a ghost on film though, I'd be set for life.

"But I'd spend a night there on my own - although I think I'm the only person who would.

"The first thing the staff and local told me when I arrived was that they don't like going upstairs alone."
