As the National Union of Students (NUS) attacks the government’s decision to replace maintenance grants for the poorest students, saying it will leave them “with a lifetime of debt”, we’d like hear how you will be affected.
From 1 August, the grants, worth about £3,500, will be replaced with additional loans that will have to be paid back at the end of an undergraduate course, once graduates earn more than £21,000.
We heard from students and prospective students, many of whom were against the plans, when they were announced by the then chancellor, George Osborne, in 2015. Now that the changes have come into effect, we are looking to speak to students who are directly affected.
Have you received maintenance grants in the past? What did they mean to you? Does the new system have any impact on your plans to study, or if you are already studying, your plans after? Perhaps you weren’t aware of the changes and now have to re-think things, or have already made a decision based on the announcement?
