Are the Texans leaving the door open for DT Gerald McCoy?

Coach Bill O’Brien and general manager Brian Gaine have always stressed that improving the Houston Texans’ roster is an ongoing and never ending task.

With this in mind, O’Brien was asked on Tuesday after practice about whether the Texans have any interest in signing former Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Gerald McCoy.

“We talk about the waiver wire, we talk about the roster every day,” O’Brien said. “So, every decision that could possibly be made out there is — whether it’s our own roster or something that’s out there. There’s a lot of players on the waiver wire. We talk about those every single day.”

Essentially, he is saying neither yes nor no. This is interesting because it leaves the door open to the possibility of the Texans considering McCoy, a six-time Pro Bowler.

Defensive tackle is not a position of a real need for the Texans, with Brandon Dunn, D.J. Reader, and Angelo Blackson all able to play on the inside. While it can be argued that none of these players are on the level of McCoy, it has to be mentioned that McCoy is not quite the player he was at his prime.

At 31, McCoy isn’t getting any younger, and given that he was set to earn $13 million this season, he would demand a similarly high fee from whoever signs him. Also, he would be seen as a starter, and with younger options at the position and talented ones at that, it seems unlikely that they will bring McCoy in.

But you never know. Perhaps O’Brien and defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel think they can get the best out of him.
