Are the Steelers making a mistake trading for Minkah Fitzpatrick now?

It’s been a busy day for the Pittsburgh Steelers, First they put their franchise quarterback on IR and now it is being reported they have traded their 2020 first-round pick to the Miami Dolphins for defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick.

From a defensive standpoint, Fitzpatrick is a clear upgrade. You have to think the Steelers are going to drop him in at free safety next to Terrell Edmunds. Fitzpatrick didn’t like switching positions in Miami so you have to think Pittsburgh won’t do this to him.

But on the heels of Ben Roethlisberger being lost for the season, the potential value of that first-round pick goes up exponentially. Is it too valuable for a safety? And is adding a piece like this when the season might be loss a smart move?

The Steelers have dumped a ton of resources into their defensive secondary. They paid big money for Joe Haden and Steven Nelson. They spent first-round picks on cornerback Artie Burns and safety Terrell Edmunds and a second-round pick on Sean Davis. Now they add another first-round pick to this mix for a draft pick that could be in the top 10 in 2020.

The good part about this question is we will have our answer in about a year. Let’s hope Fitzpatrick comes in and balls out and outplays all the missed picks by Pittsburgh in the past and becomes the next great Steelers safety.
