Are the Metros running? Nexus says 'normal service' following day of disruption

Metro service is almost back to normal after a broken-down train caused huge disruption on Saturday.

Passengers were faced with " significant delays " across the network, after a train failed in the Northumberland Park area. On the South Shields line, trains were as much as an hour behind timetable.

The fault happened at 1.20pm, and by 2.55pm the breakdown was cleared, but Metro operators Nexus acknowledged there were still delays.

On Sunday morning a Nexus spokesperson told Chronicle Live the service was now running as usual in most areas.

However, passengers should be aware of some apparently unrelated disruption which will affect journeys between Pelaw and South Hylton for most of the morning.

A spokesperson for Nexus said: "We have no trains running between Pelaw & South Hylton in both directions to allow Network Rail to carry out maintenance until approx 11.30am. During the work a replacement bus, number 901 will be calling at or close to all stations between Heworth & South Hylton."

The Metro's current fleet is decades old, and passengers are eagerly awaiting the first of the brand-new vehicles, set to arrive in 2021. Nexus insists the procurement process, which will see the £500m contract handed out to one of three firms, is ongoing, but some local politicians have demanded the process be halted to support the bid of North East firm Hitachi.
