Are the Heaton Park fireworks on this year? No one seems to know as display is 'under review'

There's uncertainty over whether this year's Bonfire Night fireworks displays will be going ahead in Manchester.

Popular events at Heaton Park, Platt Fields and Wythenshawe Park are 'under review', Manchester council has said.

It's understood a decision on whether the displays will be held will be made some time next week.

Earlier today (Wednesday) the council said it was 'still working on arrangements' for the New Year's Eve fireworks display.

It came after London Mayor Sadiq Khan announced the capital's event, usually held on the banks of the River Thames, was cancelled due to 'uncertainty' surrounding the coronavirus pandemic.

City centre spokesperson Coun Pat Karney said: "We're still working on arrangements for New Year.

"We've seen the decision in London and we're still working on the public health side of it.

"We will be making an announcement soon."

If the events are called off it will be for the second year running.

Last year's Bonfire Night and New Year celebrations in Manchester were cancelled as the the second wave of the covid pandemic ripped through the region.
