Are the Giants prepared for COVID-19 on their QB depth chart?

COVID-19 is currently surging throughout the nation. The plan to re-open the country has taken a hit as cases spike in many states. The NFL’s plans are intact — for now — but if the virus doesn’t recede, it will make it difficult for the league to proceed with their season.

That being said, teams have individual plans and preferences to adhere to as well. Depending on where a team is located, they will be faced with different challenges as the year goes on.

One challenge will be depth. Teams are looking up and down their rosters wondering if they have enough talent should any of their key starters test positive for the virus and have to sit out any length of time.

The first position, of course, is the quarterback. Many teams have a star at starter but not much else in their QB rooms. The New York Giants seem to be well-suited should something befall starter Daniel Jones. They have been building up their room the past few months.

Zack Rosenblatt of NJ.com compiled a list of each NFL teams’ quarterback depth situation and ranked them. The Giants came in at No. 11.

11. Giants (Colt McCoy): He’s not going to win the Giants any games if Jones goes down, but he’s a solid veteran option that can run the offense, which would likely consist of a lot of handoffs and dump-off passes to Saquon Barkley.

The Giants have more than McCoy. They also have Cooper Rush, the former backup in Dallas, veteran Alex Tanney and rookie Case Cookus. Only Jones and two others will make the team.

McCoy and Rush will likely be the two that make the 53-man roster. Tanney, who has basically served as Jones’ mentor, will probably be released and put on stand-by while Cookus appears to be practice squad material this year.
