Are the Colts already eyeing the 2020 WR class?

The Indianapolis Colts added twice to the wide receiver room this offseason and while the new faces have plenty of upside, the front office may already be looking toward the 2020 draft class.

In what is expected to be a strong group at wide receiver in the 2020 draft, Colts general manager Chris Ballard told Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated that they already have some strong feelings about class.

“We think next year’s receiver class is pretty good,” Ballard told Breer. “It’s gonna be really good.”

Having more weapons for quarterback Andrew Luck is something the Colts can’t overlook, regardless of how the roster is constructed. The room is expected to have a solid core of players under contract during the 2020 offseason, including the likes of T.Y. Hilton, Parris Campbell and Deon Cain.

There is already talk of the 2020 draft class being a special group at wide receiver. Whether the Colts will make an early investment or not remains to be seen, but it appears the group already has Ballard’s attention.

The Colts already added an extra second-round pick for the 2020 draft after trading out of the first round with the Washington Redskins. This could give them another opportunity to add to the group.

How the needs will fall for the Colts following the 2019 season won’t be known until the season gets underway. A lot will change over the coming months, especially with so much competition being held at the wide receiver position.

The expectation for the wide receivers is increased production in 2019, but that might not keep the Colts from investing early in the position during what is set to be an extremely strong group in the 2020 draft.
