Are shops and supermarkets open or closed on Easter Sunday 2023?

The Easter bank holidays create a four-day weekend for families to enjoy, with Good Friday (April 7) and Easter Monday (April 10) off.

Many shops limit their opening hours over the Easter weekend, oftentimes to give staff a well-deserved break. But on Easter Sunday (April 9), certain stores must close by law.

Government guidelines around trading for retailers in England, Wales and Northern Ireland state any shops larger than 3,000 square foot must be closed on Easter Sunday (April 9), so all major stores will be shut. This includes registered pharmacies that sell just medicinal products and medical and surgical appliances, shops and supermarkets at service stations and farm shops that primarily sell their own produce.

However supermarkets with smaller stores that are under 3,000 square foot may open - but with shorter hours than usual. Other non-essential shops, such as clothes stores, are shut until Easter Monday at the earliest in England.

Supermarkets including Aldi, Asda and Tesco will be closed on Sunday, as well as IKEA, B&Q and John Lewis stores. It's the same case for popular shops B&M, Home Bargains and Wilko.

The Trafford Centre and the Arndale Centre will also be closed on Easter Sunday.
