Are Prestatyn, Rhyl and Llandudno in lockdown? Can I still go on holiday to north Wales?

Four counties in North Wales are about to go into local lockdown.

The Welsh Government coronavirus restrictions are much tighter than those in England - with rules in place preventing people from leaving and travelling to these counties without good reason.

These new measures, which are said to affect 500,000 people, will come into force at 6pm on Thursday, October 1.

Which means a number of Welsh resorts will be closed to visitors from outside the local authority - with areas that are incredibly popular with tourists from the North West becoming off limits.

This is what the Welsh local lockdown means for holidaymakers and daytrippers planning to visit north Wales soon.

Which areas are going into lockdown?

The borders of Wrexham, Flintshire, Denbighshire and Conwy will closed from 6pm on Thursday, with no-one allowed in or out without "reasonable excuse".

Meaning popular destinations including Prestatyn, Rhyl, Colwyn Bay, Llandudno, Betws-Y-Coed and Llanrwst now off limits to those who do not live in the immediate local authority area.

However the regions of Gwynedd and Anglesey are free from local lockdown - and therefore still open to visitors.

Can I still go on holiday or come on a day trip?

Visitors from outside of these areas will no longer be able to take day trips in a lockdown area and holidays will be cancelled in line with guidance from the Welsh Government.

Welsh Health Minister Vaughan Gething said: “We’ve been really clear that travel for  holiday  to stay within a local area isn’t a reasonable excuse.”

He said he had now written to holiday providers and insurance companies asking them to provide refunds and support for those no longer able to travel.

What if I'm currently staying in one of the lockdown areas?

The Welsh Government says if you do not have a good reason to stay in the area, you should leave as soon as practicable.  They have already confirmed that a holiday is not considered a reasonable excuse, so you are asked to leave as soon as possible.

This includes those currently staying in second homes.

Can I still travel to my second home?

No. The Welsh Government state this is not considered to be a reasonable excuse to enter an area if it is in local lockdown.

Welsh First Minister is now appealing to Boris Johnson to ban those from English coronavirus hotspots currently under local restrictions from travelling outside of their home area.
