Are people really calling their baby girls Khaleesi?

Name: Khaleesi

Age: Pretty young.

Appearance: A human baby, surrounded by Game of Thrones fans tutting at it.

Why would Game of Thrones fans have it in for a baby? Because names from the popular TV show keep popping up on babies' birth certificates, and the figures from the Office for National Statistics show the growing popularity of the name Khaleesi.

Well, sound the alarm. No, hear them out – Khaleesi isn't even a name! It's a royal title meaning "queen", which the Game of Thrones character Daenerys Targaryen receives when she marries Khal Drogo, leader of the Dothraki clan.

What's so bad about that? Are they annoyed about Queen Latifah too? They could well be. Check the comments below.

Is Daenerys the one who spent several episodes with little dragons sitting on her shoulder like pirates' parrots? Yes, that's the one. She's also a bit of a badass. Her response to the High Valyrian saying "Valar morghulis" was "Yes. All men must die, but we are not men." She has walked into fire, saved dragons from warlocks, eaten a raw horse heart and freed an entire slave army.

Right, she sounds awesome. Isn't anyone calling their kid Daenerys? Not really. There were 50 children named Khaleesi and only four called Daenerys.

Well, now I'm annoyed too. Quite – but at least the name Arya has jumped up 221 places in the chart of popular baby names from 2011 to 2012, and she's a pretty feisty Game of Thrones character, too. In a similarly TV-influenced trend, the girl's name Skyler has jumped in popularity since Breaking Bad aired. Weirdly, last year 11 baby boys were also called Skyler.

So are Khaleesis going to replace all the Amelias now? That's pretty doubtful. When it comes to popular baby names, Amelia has held the top spot since 2011. At last count there were only 146 Khaleesis in the US, compared to five in 2010. In 2013 in the UK there were 50 Khaleesis, 11 Theons, five Sansas and three Catelyns, so you probably won't end up meeting many of them.

Do say: "No one will take her dragons."

Don't say: "Her first words were 'Valar morghulis.'"
