Are Love Island Superfans Real? Executive Producers Answer Reality TV Mystery

If there’s something that makes Love Island Australia stand out from the rest, it’s the power of the Love Island Superfans and the way they sway the game. However, ever since the show implemented this format, it’s been speculated that these overlords are fake. But now, the Love Island producers have cleared the air on whether or not the Superfans are legit.

For folks who are not well-versed in the universe of Love Island, unlike the US and UK versions of the show, Love Island Australia is pre-recorded. As a result, instead of using live voting through the viewers, Australia taps the shoulders of “Superfans” who are selected ahead of production.

These Love Island Superfans can sway the game in many ways when asked. This includes voting in challenges and in firepit sessions, which could lead to devastating dumpings.

Since it’s been implemented, viewers — and some Love Island Australia stars, such as Sophie Mills — have questioned if these Superfans are real or just a made-up concept for producers to stir the pot.

But now, Love Island Australia executive producers have come out of the woodwork to answer this reality TV conspiracy theory.

Are the Love Island Australia Superfans real?

Dishing up the piping hot tea on Love Island Australia: Officially Unpacked, executive producer Josie Steele and creative director Alex Mavroidakis confirmed that the game-changing Superfans are real.

“I wish they were fake sometimes, because it’s really hard managing them,” Steele said before Mavroidakis revealed why Superfans have never outed themselves on social media.

“What’s really annoying is that the reason they’re not popping up is because they sign an NDA and because [those NDA’s are] brilliant,” he said.

“They are paid, they watch raw vision from the villa. We need that mechanic because we’re not a live show.

“I’m gonna tell you right now, pinky swear. I’ll do this to my kids. The Superfans are real, and I don’t pinky swear lightly.”

Steele went on to add that producers do not have any control over what Superfans pick and that they do get frustrated when they FCK up storylines they were hoping for.

“To be honest, they think differently than us, sometimes, like, we are TV producers,” Steele added.

“So we’re often thinking about — it’s not that we craft anything — but we’re like, oh God, it would be cool if such and such happened, because that would be a really good story.

“And then the Superfans will be like, No, we like this person, or we want this to happen, and we have to go, oh, well, that’s what the audience thinks.”
