Are hotels open during the second lockdown?

A whole swathe of tough new coronavirus restrictions are set to be imposed in England later this week - including tighter rules around travel.

Ahead of the second national lockdown, which is set to begin on Thursday (November 5), the UK Government has issued guidance about whether hotels will be able to remain open.

While it has already been announced that non-essential businesses will be forced to close during the month-long period, but a comprehensive list of closures has yet to be released.

However there are some guidelines issued regarding hotels - and whether guests are able to stay in them.

According to the UK Government advice, hotels in England will still be able to accept guests - but only in a few strict and exceptional circumstances.

The guidance states: “Hotels, hostels and other accommodation should only open for those who have to travel for work purposes and for a limited number of other exemptions which will be set out in law.”

It also adds that the "full list of the business closures will be published and set out in law".

Given the new lockdown rules state that overnight stays and holidays away from primary residences are not allowed, staying in a hotel for leisure will be banned.

And while hotels will be able to accept guests staying for work purposes, it remains to be seen whether hotels will stay open during the lockdown or opt to close entirely.

Hotel restaurants and bars will be forced to close under the new restrictions, along with gyms, swimming pools and spas - while they have been advised to take additional measures to make public areas safer.
