Loved ones will still be able to visit County Durham cemeteries during the coronavirus outbreak.
Durham County Council says its cemeteries currently remain open but the situation is always under review.
It comes as Newcastle City Council confirmed it would be closing West Road cemetery due to Government orders on crematoriums, with all other cemeteries remaining open.
Alan Patrickson, Durham County Council’s corporate director for neighbourhoods and climate change, said: “We are continuously reviewing the situation with our cemeteries and crematoria in light of all government guidance and legislation issued in relation to COVID-19, as we are with all the services we provide.
“As it stands the cemeteries are fully open and the crematoria are for funerals only, but we will review this position should any further relevant guidance or legislation be issued.”
Northumberland County Council initially said cemeteries would be closed but made a u-turn after being contacted by bereaved families and residents.
In Wales, a number of councils were forced to shut their cemeteries after people failed to listen to social distancing advice.
Under Government rules funerals and burials in the UK can only be attended by a maximum of 10 people.
Essential travel is restricted to shopping for necessities, leaving home for one form of exercise, medical care, caring for vulnerable people and travelling to and from work.
As Easter weekend approaches, some areas are telling people not to visit their loved ones.
