Are Amazon products cheaper on Prime Day or Black Friday - what you should know

Amazon Prime Day is here, offering bargain hunters a plethora of discounts and deals across a huge range of products.

The 48-hour sales bonanza usually takes place in July and was postponed this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Savvy shoppers will still be able to bag plenty of bargains over October 13th and 14th, but if you’re wondering whether to keep your hard-earned money for Black Friday instead to get bigger discounts, PriceRunner may have the answer.

Knowing when and where to shop to get the best deals can be confusing even for the most seasoned of shoppers.

How do you know if a price is as good as it seems, and will you get a better price if you buy it at a different sale instead?

PriceRunner, one of the UK’s leading independent price comparison websites with over 1.6 million products from more than 5,000 retailers, decided to find out.

They analysed prices on almost 1,000 items from the most popular product categories, such as TV’s, mobile phones, tablets, washing machines, headphones, printers, vacuum cleaners, printers and wearable tech, to find out if they were cheaper on Prime Day or Black Friday in 2019.

Unfortunately, their analysis showed that the answer isn’t that simple.

Initially, they found that Prime Day was the winner with 57 per cent of the best deals. For those who shopped smarter and compared prices before buying, the average savings you could make on Prime Day compared to Black Friday was 12 per cent.

PriceRunner then did further analysis of 450 additional products from Amazon, where Prime Day came out on top with 45 per cent of the best deals.

Knowing when to shop isn’t always easy, Christine Gouldthorp, Consumer Expert at PriceRunner, explains: “Through our data analysis we have seen that on average, half of the products we looked at had the best price on Prime Day and the other half were cheaper on Black Friday.

“We know that both seasons are great times for bargains and good discounts, these findings highlight why it’s so important to compare prices before you buy to be sure a deal is as good as it seems.”

Three tips to make the most out of Prime Day and other sales

  • Always compare the price of a product with other retailers before you buy, as you can save a lot more money than you think

  • Use the price history tool on PriceRunner’s website to see if the price you have is actually the cheapest it’s been over time, as Black Friday or Prime Day aren’t always the cheapest times to buy

  • To prepare for the sale, find the product you are looking for and set a price alert on PriceRunner’s website. Let them do the work for you and simply receive an email when the price drops or reaches a desired threshold
