Ards North Down Councillor runs 155k to raise money for mental health

An Ards and North Down Councillor has run 155 kilometres to raise awareness of the impacts of social distancing on mental health.

Alliance Councillor for Holywood and Clandeboye Gillian Greer ran 5K a day in lockdown throughout the month of May, raising £4,021 for the depression charity AWARE.

Councillor Greer said: “There are plenty of local, worthwhile charities, but when social distancing became the norm I immediately recognised that it would place a massive strain on the mental health of many in Northern Ireland.

“I felt it was more important than ever to support a local mental health charity, who continue to provide advice and support to people in these difficult times and that is why I chose to fundraise for AWARE.

“As a working mum with two children aged 11 and 8, I fully recognise that people are juggling a lot at present with reduced family support, but it is more important than ever that people protect their mental health.”

AWARE’s Corporate Relationship Manager, Lisa Abell-Farrelly said: “This is a monumental achievement that has put mental health centre stage, and no doubt started many conversations.

“We send thanks from all the team at AWARE - staff, volunteers and service users for the support and dedication. It will enable us to continue to support people affected by depression, anxiety and bi-polar disorder throughout Northern Ireland.”
