Ards North Down Council unveils bins plan for easing of lockdown

Ards and North Down council is getting ahead of a summer surge in outdoor activity by providing extra public bins across the borough.

Extra bin capacity will be provided in high-footfall locations throughout the borough this week and will be in place through to the end of August, with the easing of lockdown restrictions and travel limitations expected to make local beauty spots a hive of activity.

The seasonal litter bins will be in place from Good Friday (April 2nd) and will help ease the pressure placed on the permanent bins already installed in these key areas.

In addition, 22 new solar-powered compactor bins will be installed across the Borough’s town centres in Bangor, Comber, Donaghadee, Holywood and Newtownards before the end of April. These bins have an automatic compacting ability that can store up to eight times more waste than the average bin.

Ards and North Down Mayor Councillor Trevor Cummings said: "Some of the more popular locations in our borough can struggle to provide enough bin capacity during busy times of year. A review of the council’s bin servicing schedule has already helped to ease the pressure and this new seasonal litter bin service will help to further relieve congestion.

"It will reduce the number of instances of overflowing bins, ensuring the borough remains clean and attractive for all residents and visitors. Importantly, it will also reduce the risk of overflowing litter which can be harmful to wildlife and damage our environment."

The additional grey wheeled bins will be installed at:

  • Bangor: Seafront (Promenade and Eisenhower Pier/Long Hole) / Banks Lane Car Park / Seacliff Road Car Park.
  • Donaghadee: The Parade
  • Holywood: Seapark
  • Groomsport: Car Park and Promenade
  • Millisle: Car Park/Public Toilet Block and Lagoon
  • Ballywalter: Harbour Car Park
  • Portaferry: Shore Road
