Ards 1 Cliftonville 4: Reds tee up BetMcLean League Cup quarter-final with Portadown

Cliftonville cruised into the quarter-finals of the BetMcLean League Cup with a 4-1 win over Ards at Clandeboye Park.

Jonny Addis, Chris Gallagher, Ryan Curran and Joe Gormley were all on target to help book a last-eight trip to Portadown next month.

Addis had the Reds ahead at the break when he opened the scoring with his first goal for the club since joining from Ballymena United in the summer.

Jamie Glover levelled for the Championship leaders, before another summer signing Gallagher also chalked up his first goal for Cliftonville to restore the visitors’ lead.

The Reds’ third and fourth came from familiar sources, Ryan Curran making it 3-1 with his fifth goal of the season, before Gormley added a fourth with his seventh of the campaign.

It was a swift return to winning ways for Paddy McLaughlin's men following Saturday's 1-0 league defeat to Ballymena United at the Showgrounds.

Portadown eased into the last-eight with a 1-0 win over Ballinamallard United of the Championship.

Lee Bonis, who scored a dramatic equaliser in Saturday’s 2-2 league draw with Glentoran at the BetMcLean Oval, pounced for the winner with a smart finish midway through the first half.

The striker could have added a second when he was sent racing clear by Adam Salley in the second period, but his close range shot was superbly saved by Mallards keeper Jamie Ray.

The League Cup quarter-finals are scheduled for Tuesday, November 9.

RESULTS: Ards 1 Cliftonville 4; Portadown 1 Ballinamallard United 0.
