Ardoyne Youth Club using technology to keep relationships with leaders and young people during isolation

A Belfast Youth Club is using technology to stay connected with its young people during the current health crisis.

The youth workers and kids from Ardoyne Youth Club have been using 'Zoom' to communicate with one another and give support during what is a confusing and stressful time for the team.

Youth worker Stephen Konrad told Belfast Live that staying connected through the isolation stages of COVID-19 in Northern Ireland is beneficial for the young people's mental wellbeing.

He added: "We are all working from home and still engaging with all our young people and community online and being as creative as possible.

"All youth organisations now are doing the same. Still engaging with their young people and educating them through online resources. We have had some great group work sessions online using the app Zoom.

"We are keeping our young people as busy and active as possible to refrain them from becoming bored. A lot of our young people deal with mental health problems and doing work like this is key to keep them from having any break downs and that etc."

Stephen said that most of their youth work is done face to face, but that they had adapted well to the ongoing situation.

"With the majority of our work being hands on and face to face it has refrained us from carrying out the normal work that we do," he said.

"But it hasn’t stopped us from carrying out our role and responsibilities within our communities. We are still engaging with all our groups that we have running in the centre by talking online.

"We do a lot of mentoring and one to one work as well as education and employment support and we are being able to continue this through various online methods.

"The next few weeks will be tough for everyone including our young people and we will continue support them through this period of time."
