Ardern on top in last NZ poll of 2020

Jacinda Ardern's political support remains sky high according to the first poll taken since her government's re-election.

Labour scored a thumping win in the October 17 election and commands a majority in the New Zealand parliament.

Kiwis like what they see so far from Ms Ardern's second term, with 53 per cent offering support - compared to 50 per cent on election day.

The 40-year-old leader has also had a personal boost and is up to 58 per cent support as preferred prime minister.

The opposition National party commands just 25 per cent support from the electorate, down a further one per cent from its horror election showing.

While there's no scheduled election until late 2023, the poll could have ramifications for National leader Judith Collins.

Ms Collins' support as preferred prime minister plunged from 20 per cent in the final pre-election poll to just eight per cent.

The 61-year-old was re-endorsed as leader by the opposition's shrunken caucus last month but without a poll uptick in the new year, Ms Collins may face a challenge to her leadership.
