Ardeer Thistle's ground set on fire by heartless vandals

Ardeer Thistle had their ground set on fire last night by sick vandals.

The junior side who lie bottom of West League Two had a cabin and their hospitality suite badly damaged by firebugs at around 6.30pm.

It's not the first time the ground has been a target, as club secretary Peter McBlain reckons something happens "whenever kids are on holiday from school".

McBlain, who has been at Ardeer for 24 years, admits this is the worst damage he has ever seen in his time at the club.

He said: "We were meant to have a retirement party this weekend for our own president.

"We are hoping to get it up and running again for that, we have received a lot of tremendous support from other junior teams.

"The back bit of the cabin is badly damaged, it's very costly for us as it's been set on fire that many times it's not insured.

"We are hoping that the school cameras (from nearby Glencairn Primary) catch the culprits, we have got a couple of descriptions.

"We just need to keep our ears open, as someone will slip up.

"I got nine or 10 phone calls to say it was on fire from people who stay nearby.

"Last Easter the cabin was targeted again, every time the kids are on holiday something happens.

"Luckily they never got into the main clubhouse where all the strips and nets are."

He added: "We are hoping to raise funds from the president's do if we can get that on.

"We will just need to block it off until we can get enough money together, because we are struggling.

"We are bottom of the league and we have a bad year, this has just summed it up.

"We won't give in to them, that's for sure."

Assistant boss Jim Catterson posted pictures of the damage on social media.

Last night he said: "Vandles set fire to function suite at Ardeer Thistle FC tonight.

"Boys and the committee absolutely gutted. The wee bar brings in alot of much needed cash on match days.

"Sad times for the wee club - who does that?
