'Arctic chill' to batter Scotland with heavy snow over Easter weekend

Snow is expected to batter large parts of Scotland as temperatures get set to plummet over the Easter weekend.

Forecasters at WXCHARTS are anticipating a band of heavy rain to sweep in from the north west on the afternoon of Easter Sunday.

This will then be followed by heavy snow showers, which is expected to blanket mainly northerly and western parts by around 9pm that evening.

Temperatures are also expected to dip to below freezing overnight, with lows of around -4C predicted in the north east of the country.

More snow is expected to fall on the far north of Scotland for much of the day on Easter Monday.

The weather will be a stark contrast to the high teens seen across Scotland earlier in the week - with temperatures reaching a high of 16C in some parts.

Experts at the Met Office say the dramatic change in the conditions will come as Arctic air blows from the north into Scotland.

Mark Sidaway, Deputy Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office, said: “After a settled, warm spell with plenty of sunshine particularly across England and Wales our weather will take a notable change in direction later in the weekend.

“Very cold Arctic air will move in from the north west through Sunday, bringing snow showers and freezing overnight temperatures.

“The snow showers will predominantly affect the north and west of the UK. The south and east will likely remain drier but still cold with a lower chance of wintry showers.”
