Arctic blast set to hit Scotland with snow expected in coming days and temperatures dropping to -11C

Scotland is due to be hit by an Arctic blast with snow expected in the coming days and temperatures plunging.

Forecasters say the chances of snow across the country in the days after Wednesday is around 50 per cent as the weather turns colder.

Snow will remain a likely "threat" during the rest of the month while temperatures could plummet to as low as -11C from November 23.

A mild Remembrance Sunday is predicted by forecasters with bright spells before conditions begin to turn chilly.

Weather maps from WXCharts show a front bringing snow heading towards Scotland by the middle of the week.

The latest maps show snow could land on the northwest of Scotland by Wednesday as colder temperatures take hold.

By November 23 there is likely to be a carpet of snow over Northern Ireland, Wales and parts of northern England.

The agency predicted temperatures could fall to fall to between -7C and -11C that week.

Tyler Ros, AccuWeather meteorologist, said: “The threat for snow between November 17-22 looks to be around normal for the time of the year, which is any accumulating snow is likely to occur in the higher elevations of northern England and Scotland.

“We do have to watch a cold snap that appears to move into eastern Europe early next week.

“If this bleeds westward towards the UK (with the core of the cold remaining in eastern Europe), then the temperatures will be near to slightly below normal during this stretch.”

But Remembrance Sunday is expected to be better than a typical mid-November day.

BBC Weather’s Tomasz Schafernaker said: “Some sunny spells but generally speaking there is a large amount of cloud on the way. It is going to be mild and a particularly mild morning, way above the average for the time of the year.

“Sunshine developing across central parts of the UK and some areas being quite sunny but either side of that in the east and the west a fair bit of cloud, really mild 14C in the south around 12 to 13C in the north.”
