Arctic blast hits KY; knocks out power to thousands

Updated at 8:49 Friday

Poweroutage.us reports more than 18,000 homes were without power in the commonwealth Friday morning as a strong, arctic cold front brought subzero temperatures as well as some snow.

Woodford County had the largest number of outages with more than 15,000.

As of Friday morning, temperatures across the commonwealth were mostly below zero with gusty winds making it dangerous to be outside. The National Weather Service issued a Wind Chill Warning through 1 p.m. today as winds chills could reach 30 below zero.

The Lexington Public Library announced it would be closed today due to the weather conditions. Baptist Health Hospitals said they would be on a two-hour opening delay this morning.

Governor Beshear earlier this week declared a state of emergency for Kentucky ahead of the winter storm.
