Archive Glasgow footage captures last days of city blacksmiths

An incredible piece of footage has emerged capturing the last days of a Glasgow blacksmiths.

The footage, which was shared online this week by BBC Archive, takes us back to Dumbarton Road in 1965, where an experienced blacksmith and farrier is lamenting the end of an era.

“In another 20 years it’ll be a hard job to get a fella who can shoe a horse at all," says Jimmy, who reveals he has been shoeing horses around Glasgow since he was a boy.

Jimmy tells viewers he gets to shoe between 10 and 13 horses each week - just enough to keep him in business, but it's clear that his profession is on the way out.

Horses were once essential to keep Glasgow on the move, but by the 1960s fewer and fewer of our equine friends could be heard clip-clopping along our streets.

There were still horse-drawn milk rounds and you might catch a glimpse of the rag and bone merchants with their horse, but by and large, saddle and hoof had been replaced by combustion engines and Dunlop tyres.

"One of the horses you've got in today is from Glasgow Corporation," notes the interviewer. "But at the same time, they've announced that they're going to take the last of the eight horses they've had working in the parks department off the road."

This is not too much of a concern for Jimmy, however, who says the heyday of attracting business via the corporation is long gone.

He replies: "It won't affect me too bad now because there's not many horses left in the corporation.

"Going back maybe 20 year ago, when you had a contract with a corporation horse you were quite happy."

The interviewer asks Jimmy if he has considered focusing on wrought iron work, like so many old blacksmiths have done in more rural areas.

"I was never much interested in it at all," Jimmy retorts. "I'd sooner have the horses."

Commenting on the clip, @odhrangallaghe said: "It’s so interesting that, despite having an awareness that he’s part of a side of Glasgow that will soon be completely lost to time, he remains positive about his situation."

While guys like Jimmy may be a thing of the past, there are still blacksmiths and metalwork experts to be found in the Glasgow area to this day. Saying that, you'd be hard pressed to find any who could adequately shoe your horse.
