The Archbishop Desmond Tutu has been readmitted to hospital in South Africa, a week after he was released following treatment for an infection.

The Archbishop went back into hospital in Cape Town after he began experiencing discomfort, his foundation told the Associated Press.

The 83-year-old Nobel Peace Prize laureate’s daughter Mpho said his hospitalisation was not related to his prostate cancer, which he has lived with for 15 years.

A statement from the foundation quoted his daughter as saying: "His doctors considered it prudent for him to return to hospital for observation.

"He'll have a few days of bed-rest while his medical dream team brings the situation under control and determines the next course of action, if any. He will stay in hospital until the weekend, at least."

The retired bishop was treated for an infection last week.
