Archant, which calls itself the UK's largest independently-owned regional media business, has announced a period of increased profitability and growth for the first six months of this year.
It reported an operating profit of £7m, up £2m on the same period in 2009, though total revenue for the six months to 3 July declined by £0.7m (0.9%) to £70.1m.
But it should noted that newspaper publishing operating profit went up by 46.5%, from £4.2m in 2009 to £6.3m.
Archant's chairman Richard Jewson said the company's management had "continued to exploit the opportunities presented by the changing trading environment whilst reducing operating costs by 4.1%, preserving cash and seeking new ways to develop our digital businesses."
Property advertising grew by 9.3% but there were small reductions in the other categories. Meanwhile, total digital revenues increased by 25%.
