Arbroath win can 'trigger' Hamilton Accies' season, says star

Hamilton Accies star Steve Lawson hopes his side can ‘trigger’ their season with a win over Arbroath on Saturday.

The former Livingston midfielder had hoped Accies would get their first three points of the season at home to Raith Rovers last weekend, but the Fifers left New Douglas Park with all three points in a 2-0 win.

Lawson now hopes his side can get going when Dick Campbell brings his Red Lichties to South Lanarkshire.

He said: “We were disappointed on Saturday, because when we started the week we wanted to win that game.

“We had three draws before, so we wanted that game to be a trigger, to say ‘the season starts now’.

“Three draws and one win is a good start, but now three draws and one loss is not a good start.

“But we still have 32 games to go.

“We’re not in a bad situation, we still have time, but we need to change that as soon as possible, starting with the Arbroath game this weekend.

“I think we have a good team, it’s just that we need some things, like a trigger, to say ‘start now’.

“It will start, I think, against Arbroath.

“A win against Arbroath and then it’s a different season.”

Lawson denies that Saturday’s 2-0 defeat against Ian Murray’s side was a wake-up call, but knows they need to get points on the board soon.

He said: “We knew the league is tough, it’s hard to play in the Championship and every game is like a cup final.

“It’s not because we’re playing Raith Rovers, Arbroath or Dundee – for us it’s the same game.

“We play every game to win, and we know it will be hard to win every game, but we come out to win the game – not just to draw.

“Every game is a good chance, we’re not looking at who we’re playing against.

“Every game is a ‘win’ – Dundee, Partick Thistle, Arbroath, whatever.

“What we need to change to win games is the mentality, to play forward, have more chances to score goals, and keep a clean sheet.

“We don’t need to score two, three or four goals to win a game, just one goal is enough, it’s just about keeping the clean sheet.

“If we score one goal and don’t concede, we will win the game.”
