Arbroath FC fans brave freezing temperatures to cheer on team in Arctic Circle

A pair of Arbroath FC fans have braved freezing temperatures to spread football cheer.

Devoted Lichties, Andy and Sandra Furye, were photographed decked out in their team’s maroon and white colours in -26°C Lapland.

They were told the epic conditions were identical to “an evening game at Gayfield in February”.

The couple, who are hoping to get married this summer, were 1760 miles from the stadium, where their team have been tearing up trees this season.

The club currently sit top of the Scottish Championship, three points clear of their nearest rivals, Inverness.

The photos got a great reception from fellow fans when they turned up on the Arbroath FC Facebook page earlier this week.

Andy,42, and 41-year-old Sandra’s caption said: “Last day in Lapland, had to take some pictures at the Sweden / Finland border, Andy & Sandra , Gayfield is 1760 miles from here.

“Was -26°C yesterday but it’s roasting today -18°C thankfully.”

In response, the Facebook page admin told them: “Those cold temperatures will put you in perfect condition for an evening game at Gayfield in February!

“Safe travels! C'mon the Lichties!”

DundeeLive caught up with construction manager Andy when he returned home. We asked him whether Arbroath could go all the way this season.

He told us: "The buzz around Arbroath is incredible for a small town.

"Do I think we can win the league ? Wow, 3 months ago I’d of said no, but we have beaten all the top full time challengers on their own patch, Why not .

"It will be tough but we have the best management team in the league, maybe in the county and the team spirit is incredible right now."
