Arbenit Xhemajli 'can't wait to get started' after signing for Sunderland

Arbenit Xhemajli admits he "can't wait to get started" after signing for Sunderland.

The Kosovo international has been involved in the Black Cats pre-season plans in recent weeks, and the club announced on Friday that he had signed a two-year deal.

The 22-year-old defender is ineligible for Saturday's Carabao Cup clash with League One rivals Hull City, but could make his Sunderland debut in the Football League Trophy clash with Aston Villa's under-21s on Tuesday night.

Xhemajli told the club's website: “It feels great to get the deal done. I’m really happy to be here and I can’t wait to get started.

"I had some positive talks with the manager and from what I have seen, I believe we will have a successful season.”

Xhemajli becomes the Black Cats fifth signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Aiden O'Brien, Bailey Wright, Morgan Feeney, and Remi Matthews.

Sunderland claim a 'significant' compensation package was agreed with Neuchâtel Xamax following the end of the defender's contract in Switzerland.

Xhemajli made his senior international debut against Gibraltar in October 2019, having made five appearances for his country's under-21 side.

The defender made his first-team debut in 2017 and went on to make more than 50 appearances before making the switch to Wearside.
