Aran jumper back in fashion thanks to Chris Evans in new mystery movie Knives Out

The Aran jumper is enjoying a resurgence in popularity, thanks to new mystery movie Knives Out.

Actor Chris Evans dons the traditional ecru garment in his role as Ransom Drysdale, the spoiled grandson of wealthy crime novelist Harlan Thrombey.

The film sees Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) arrive at a lush estate to interview the quirky relatives of patriarch Thrombey (Christopher Plummer) who died mysteriously during his 85th birthday celebrations.

But it was Evans' jumper that got fans and fashionistas's hearts racing.

Actress Mara Wilson tweeted: "I was at the premiere last night and I’m pretty sure people clapped and cheered when that sweater came out."

The Aran jumpers were traditionally worn by fishermen living on the Aran islands with different stitching patterns for every family.

They were hand-knitted from undyed cream-coloured báinín, a yarn made from sheep's wool, sometimes known as "black-sheep" wool.

The wool was unwashed to retain a natural oil called lanolin, making the garment water-repellent and suitable for wearing at sea.

And two years ago, it was even featured at a major exhibition in the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.

The jumper has drawn massive appeal on social media, with one fan even photoshopping it onto internet sensation Baby Yoda.

And Aran jumper manufacturers revealed they're struggling to cope with the demand.

Blarney Woollen Mills has seen a 150% increase in sales of their Blasket Honeycomb Stitch Aran Sweater since Evans' appearance in the movie, The New York Post reports.

Black Friday accounts for some of the spike in sales but about 30 percent of sales are believed to be inspired by Evans' jumper.

US retailer L.L. Bean produced their own cotton dupe of the jumper for $99/€89 in the same shade as Evans wears and it has now sold out.
