Arab Parliament Speaker Supports Palestinian State with East Jerusalem as its Capital

Speaker of the Arab Parliament Mishaal bin Fahm Al-Salami underlined the importance of the formation of the Palestine Committee with the task of issuing an annual report documenting the Israeli violations against the Palestinian people.

He noted that the report would be published in three languages, Arabic, French and English, and would be sent to national and regional parliaments, international organizations and bodies.

In an interview with Asharq Al-Awsat at the end of his four-year presidency of the Arab Parliament, Al-Salami shed light on the efforts undertaken by the Arab institution to support major Arab causes, including Palestine.

“The Arab Parliament achieved during the second legislative term, which began in October 2016 and ended in September this year, a qualitative leap, by adopting specific programs aimed at improving the nature of its work and consolidating its role in the region and the world,” he said.

Among the most important achievements cited by Al-Salami, the decision to “establish a Palestine committee headed by the speaker of the Arab Parliament, which undertook the publication of an annual report documenting Israeli violations against the Palestinian people in the occupied Palestinian territories.”

“We believe that the region will not enjoy security and stability except with a solution to the Palestinian issue and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state … based on international legitimate decisions and the 2002 Arab Peace Initiative,” he emphasized.

“The Arab Parliament considers that the Arab Peace Initiative is the best and ideal solution, but rather the basis for resolving the Palestinian cause.”

Regarding the strategies on Turkey and Iran, Al-Salami said: “The Arab Parliament has placed at the forefront of its priorities addressing foreign interference in the internal affairs of Arab countries through the Iranian regime, and Turkey’s expansionist colonial ambitions.”

“The Arab Parliament approved, on June 24, a unified Arab strategy for dealing with Iran and another on Turkey, which included a call to consider stopping trade exchange and joint projects between Arab countries and both Iran and Turkey until the two countries abandon their policies and hostile activities that threaten peace, security and stability in the Arab region,” he told Asharq Al-Awsat.
