The Department of Legal Affairs at the Arab League recommended Wednesday working on strengthening criminal justice systems and opening new horizons for cooperation and partnership between the Arab countries and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.
This office provides support to the exerted efforts and to the activation of regional and international cooperation to combat these crimes.
During the inaugural meeting for facilitating and following the Regional Programme for the Arab States to Prevent and Combat Crime, Terrorism and Health Threats, director of the legal affairs department at the Arab League Yasser Abdel Moneim stressed the importance of continuing and updating strategies and mechanisms to combat criminal and terrorist threats.
Abdel Moneim noted that the regional program was launched in 2016 in the Arab League’s headquarters for a basic reason that is to back efforts of Arab League member states to combat current threats via reinforcing the sovereignty of law and the sustainable development in these countries.
He added that the program includes 18 Arab states, shedding light on the global interest in combating terrorism and crime, which have worsened lately especially in the Arab region.
Abdel Moneim continued that five sub joint programs were prepared for cooperation between the Arab states and the UNODC. They include: combating organized crime, terrorism, corruption and financial crimes, criminal justice, preventing crime, protection against drug usage, treatment and care related to drug use disorders, and finally preventing HIV and providing the relevant care.
