Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit expressed on Saturday his concern with the “rapid deterioration of Lebanese-Gulf relations.”
In a statement, he said the crisis sparked by offensive remarks by Lebanese Information Minister George Kordahi and the ensuing stances “should have been tackled by Lebanon, which should have addressed the root cause of the problem, not pour fuel on the fire.”
The result is a major rift between Lebanon and its Arab surroundings, especially the Gulf, he lamented.
Aboul Gheit hoped that relations would be mended and that the row, caused by sides that want to break the fraternity binding Lebanon with its Arab and Gulf brothers, would be resolved.
Saudi Arabia had on Friday summoned its ambassador in Lebanon and expelled the Lebanese ambassador in Riyadh in wake of Kordahi’s offensive statements against the Kingdom and the war in Yemen.
Bahrain and Kuwait have since followed suit.
